Dr. Stephen Collins (1927-2010) worked as a professor of Biological Sciences at Southern Connecticut State University from 1962 to 1989 and was awarded emeritus status upon his departure. Prior to teaching at SCSU, Collins studied at Cornell University and graduated with a doctorate from Rutgers University. He was a forest ecologist at the Forestry Department of The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station from 1957 to 1962. A dedicated ecologist and conservationist, Collins served as first chairman of the Bethany Town Conservation for nine years and founded the Bethany Conservation Trust, Inc. in 1968. He was a leading force in creating the West Rock Ridge State Park, helped found the West Rock Ridge Park Association, and was vice-chairman to the West Rock Ridge State Advisory Council. Collins was a professional photographer who took some of the more well-known photographs of West Rock Ridge. He was also an active writer and public speaker--publishing articles about his environmental concerns and testifying before the Connecticut Sitting Council about protecting West Rock Ridge State Park from commercial interests.
